Neurofilament Light Chain

Neurofilament light chain (NfL) is a protein that is a component of the neuronal cytoskeleton. It is released into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and bloodstream when neurons are damaged or degenerate. NfL is being studied as a biomarker for various neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and traumatic brain injury. Elevated levels of NfL in the blood or CSF may indicate ongoing neurodegeneration.
