Haptoglobin

Haptoglobin is a plasma protein produced by the liver that plays a crucial role in binding free hemoglobin released from red blood cells (RBCs) during hemolysis. By forming a haptoglobin-hemoglobin complex, it helps prevent the loss of iron and protects the kidneys from damage caused by free hemoglobin. The Haptoglobin test measures the level of haptoglobin in the blood and is often used to evaluate hemolytic anemia, a condition characterized by the premature destruction of red blood cells.
