Glial Fibrillary Acid Protein (GFAP)

Glial Fibrillary Acid Protein (GFAP) is a protein produced by astrocytes, a type of glial cell in the central nervous system. GFAP is considered a key marker for astrocytic activation and is involved in maintaining the structural integrity of the brain and spinal cord. The GFAP test measures the levels of this protein in the blood or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Elevated GFAP levels can indicate conditions associated with neuroinflammation or damage to the central nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, or gliomas (a type of brain tumor).
