Gastrin

Gastrin is a hormone produced by the G cells in the stomach lining that stimulates the secretion of gastric acid (HCl) from parietal cells. It plays a crucial role in the digestive process, promoting the breakdown of food and aiding in the absorption of nutrients. The Gastrin test measures the level of gastrin in the blood and is typically used to investigate conditions related to excessive gastric acid production, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, which is characterized by gastrin-secreting tumors. Elevated gastrin levels may also be seen in cases of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, or after gastric surgery.
