Why Take This Test? Fibrinogen is a blood test that measures the concentration of fibrinogen, a protein that is essential for blood clot formation. Produced by the liver, fibrinogen plays a key role in stopping bleeding by being converted into fibrin, which forms a blood clot. Abnormal fibrinogen levels can point to clotting disorders, bleeding problems, or liver disease. This test is commonly used to assess the risk of excessive bleeding or clotting in conditions like disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), liver dysfunction, or cardiovascular diseases.
