Culture, Throat is a laboratory test used to detect and isolate pathogenic bacteria from the throat, primarily to identify infections caused by organisms such as Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus), which is responsible for strep throat, as well as other bacterial and viral pathogens that can cause pharyngitis and tonsillitis. During the procedure, a healthcare provider swabs the back of the throat and tonsils to collect a sample. This sample is then cultured on specific media that promote the growth of bacteria while inhibiting other organisms.
