Culture, Mycobacteria (AFB)

This test is essential for diagnosing mycobacterial infections, which can affect the lungs and other parts of the body. During the procedure, specimens such as sputum, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, or tissue samples are collected from the patient. These samples are cultured on specialized media that support the growth of mycobacteria while inhibiting other bacteria. The culture is incubated for an extended period, as mycobacteria grow slowly compared to other organisms.
