This test is crucial for diagnosing foodborne illnesses and infections associated with symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, and vomiting. During the test, a stool sample is collected from the patient and cultured on selective media designed to promote the growth of Salmonella and Shigella while inhibiting the growth of other bacteria. The samples are incubated under appropriate conditions to allow any present pathogens to multiply.
